At the time of the Universal Exhibition in 1900, Edouard-Alfred Martel took a close interest in the development of the all-new Metro to conjure up the Gouffre de Padirac of tomorrow. William Beamish was the son of one of the partner founders of the Société du Puits de Padirac. From his childhood, he had led an intrepid and bold life. His destiny gradually became linked with that of the Gouffre, over which he would preside from 1938 to 1969. 40 years after the site was opened to the public, the "New Padirac" was inaugurated. But war had just broken out, and the future seemed more uncertain than ever.
