1936: a young journalist, full of admiration and enthusiastic about speleology, introduced himself to an old man whose portrait he wanted to depict. Edouard-Alfred Martel was the man who, during his lifetime, discovered about 1,500 caves, abysses, and other cavities. He remembered the Gouffre de Padirac, which he had explored 30 years previously with his companions and with the help of ropes, ladders, candles, and boats. Braving superstitions and legends, they ventured forth where no-one had dared go, and they found a treasure in the "Devil's Orifice".
